More rain

Another inch of rain yesterday. That makes about two inches in a week. Still need to hook up the fourth rain barrel. We surely would have filled it up just yesterday.

We've been seeing our latest screech owl tenant on pretty much a daily basis. She pops up once dusk sets in, and peeks around the yard till dark.

Looks like hummingbird season was somewhat of a bust. Never saw more than one of the guys. Maybe next year will be better.

On a positive note, Goldfinches are just around the corner. I'll be cleaning feeders this weekend in anticipation of the little pigs.

Weird spotting of the week: black-capped viero? Short-tailed flittish little thing. Darkish on top, yellow breast, flying profile more akin to a butterfly than a bird. K and I both saw it, so I'm sure I didn't imagine it.

You heard it here first, and we've got the proof:

Yesterday was new gutter day. Had them installed by 4, had the rain barrels hooked up by 6, and by 8, we had us some rain. One inch of rain later we had three 54 gallon barrels completely filled to the brim. Guess we'll have to hook up that fourth overflow, huh?

Nice Rain

Got an inch and a half of rain yesterday. It finished filling up our rain barrel (54 gallons!) and greened up the lawn pretty nicely. The ground is still wet today, but I didn't see any evidence of more than just sprinkles.

If You Build It...

Over the past year or so, our herb garden has gradually made a transition to a butterfly garden. Thanks be to getting what you asked for, the garden is in full swing and attracting the little guys like nobody's business. Peak spotting today was five "monarch-y" looking ones, two pairs and one flitting solo.

We both went a little nuts buying fall herbs and more perennial color over the weekend. It just might be time to plant yet another bed in the back.
