Official Count

Counted birds for two hours while doing the dishes yesterday. Here's what I reported:
Rock Pigeon - 1
White-winged Dove - 10
Downy Woodpecker - 1
Carolina Chickadee - 1
Carolina Wren - 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1
European Starling - 9
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1
Great-tailed Grackle - 2
House Finch - 1
American Goldfinch - 9
House Sparrow - 4
Not a bad count. Got to catch most of the rarer species (kinglet, chickadee, wren), and aside from missing Cedar waxwings, it's a pretty good summation of what we see in a typical week.

Getting ready

For the Great Backyard Bird Count. This list doesn't count, because it was taken in dribs and drabs over the course of about five hours. But I promise that this is a real live count.

I know we have more than three goldfinches around, and I know we have more than one Carolina Wren. That cardinal has a mate that you see in my cardinal post below. But that was another day and this was today.
As for the single Cedar Waxwing? No idea. They usually travel in groups no smaller than ten or so, but I only saw the one.

Yep, they're still around. And if you see one of them, you can be sure that another fifty will be following that one. I count about two dozen of them here, bathing with a single starling.
